Tokachi Mainichi Newspaper, Inc. was one of the first local newspapers to introduce advanced digital production technology. In 1979, we changed our production system from conventional typesetting to computerized typesetting with a tape punch and character output unit. In 1984, a new computer-aided typesetting machine was installed. In 1996, we introduced the computerized typesetting system (CTS), which computerized the whole process of newspaper editing and production. The introduction of the CTS allowed for quick, efficient newspaper production. In 1999, we invested in the latest tower rotary printer, able to print a 40-page paper including 16 color pages, which is equal to the capacity of those used by the national papers. This greatly enhanced the visuals and enabled an increase in the number of pages in the daily edition. In 2004, an updated CTS has allowed us to print double-page layouts and clearer photographs. In 2006 a new tower rotary printer was added, which makes it possible to print a 40-page paper including 24 color pages.
In 2008 Kachimai Printing, Inc. was established by separating the printing and shipping departments. The company’s printing quality and information management system are highly evaluated, and it became the first printing factory in Japan to print two national papers (Yomiuri and Asahi), which has attracted the attention of people in related industries. Taking advantage of the new management structure the company intends to further expand its printing business in Japan.
